The August 2008 South Ossetia conflict brought about a sharp deterioration in Russia’s political relationship with the USA and Europe. Such a major event in politics and diplomacy inevitably impacts on economic relations, those in gas markets included. Unquestionably, investor sentiment turned against Russia: its military action hastened a big outflow of funds from Moscow’s equity markets. But changes in rapidly-moving financial markets bear only indirect relation to the energy sector, where contracts are fixed for years and infrastructure investments are planned over decades. For gas and oil, the main consequence of the conflict is surely that transit routes through Georgia will carry greater political risk, due to the instability implied by Russian recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
