Good morning/afternoon, dear judges. I am No.1 candidate applying for a primary school English teacher. It’s my honor to stand here to share my teaching thoughts with all of you. Today my topic is “Our dreams”. To make my thoughts much clearer, I’d like to divide my teaching structure into the following parts: analysis of teaching material, students, teaching and learning methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design. Now I’m about to present them one by one.
一、说教材:
The first and foremost is the analysis of the teaching material. Today’s lesson is Story time, Unit 8, grade 6B, published by Yilin Press. Its main theme is about talking about one’s dream, which is closely related to students’ daily lives. This lesson offers a good chance for students to improve their listening and speaking skills.
According to the demands of the New Curriculum of English, today’s objectives are as follows:
Knowledge aims:
Students can listen, read, speak and understand the words: dentist, dancer, football player, pianist and understand the story correctly. Plus, they are able to use the sentence pattern “What do you want to be in the future? I want to be a…. I want to (do)…” to talk about their dreams
Ability aims:
students can gradually improve their listening,reading and speaking abilities by practicing.
Emotional aims:
students can take part in more activities and their interests of learning English could be arisen, what’s more, they can establish the awareness of studying hard to achieve their dreams.
Based on the teaching aims, the teaching key point I designed is to help the students know the new words and sentence pattern. And the teaching difficult point is to teach students to use “I want to be a…. I want to (do)…” correctly.
二、说学情:
OK, let’s turn to the analysis of students. Grade 6 students have studied English for more than 3 years and they certainly mastered some English knowledge. However, their ability of using English is in the level of beginner. Take this factor into account, the development of communicating will be an important aim of this lesson.
三、说教学方法:
According to the analysis of teaching material and the students, I am going to arrange my lesson by mainly using the Task-based Method and Communicative approach. The learning methods of this lesson will be focused on cooperative and researched methods with recorder.
四、说教学方法:
And the next one is the most important part of today, the teaching procedures, which will be demonstrated in the following steps:
Step 1: Warming up / Leading in
At the beginning, I will greet with them, and lead them to play the Magic box game like this: Guys, look, I have a magic box in my hand. There are many kinds of people in it, but only clever people can see them. Would like to check whether you are clever? OK, let’s go.
What can you see? Lily! Oh, a policeman. You are clever. What can you see, Jack? A teacher. Smart boy. And what can you see? Oh, Jimmy says he can see a doctor. I agree with you, Jimmy.
After the game, I would set a question for them, which is if a child wants to do the same job like these people in the future, what word can be used to describe his goal. Then, I will use a free talk to lead in the topic: Unit 8 Our dreams.
By doing so, the students’ interest toward the topic could be improved and leading in the topic, therefore they will have a happy experience in this lesson.
Step 2: presentation and practice
At first, I will present the new words “dancer, football player, dentist, pianist” by drawing pictures, doing TPR, having free talks and showing pictures. Next I will set a question to present them the sentence patterns “What do you want to be in the future? I want to be a…. I want to (do)…”and set an example by using it, which can make it easier for the students to understand the new sentence pattern. Then I will ask students to look at the picture of the main character in the story and guess what they are talking about.
Pictures, TPR, free talks and examples will give a direct image to students and they will learn new words easily, what’s more, guessing the main topic of the story could stimulate students’ interests in learn the new dialogue.
Afterward, I will arrange four activities for them to have a deep understand of the knowledge.
Activity 1: Watch the video of the story and check their guess.
Activity 2: Read the story and judge the sentences, such as:1. Mike’s dreaming is being a dentist to help many children. 2. Liu Tao loves football, so he wants to be a football player. 3.Yang Ling is a pianist.
Activity 3: Read the story again and fill in the blanks: 1. Wang Bing wants to ___an astronaut. He wants to ____in the space. 2.Su Hai wants to____, because it can make people healthy and beautiful.
Activity 4: Read after the tape and try to imitate the pronunciation and intonation.
After the four activities, I will assess their performance and correct their mistakes if necessary.
Videos, T or F, filling in blanks, reading and imitation are used here to have the students practice in a very relaxed way. Therefore, their knowledge is practiced and their confidence is boosted.
Step 3 Consolidation
They will have a task to do with their group members. They are asked to work in groups and have a survey about their group members’ dreams and the reason. After that I will ask some students to report their results.
Task-based teaching method is used here to help students further understand the story. At the same time, they will learn how to cooperate with others.
Step 4: Summary
I will ask students to conclude what they have learnt and give supplement for the missing points and emphasize the emotional aims, such as studying hard to achieve their dreams and taking part in more activities to develop their interesting in learning English.
Step 5: Homework
Homework is important for the further development of students’ language ability. So, I will ask the students to retell the story after school and interview their best friend about their dreams and the reason, then share it next class. Students can apply what they have learnt in real life.
